Last Friday, Jan. 2, we drove out to the cottage to see if the local bakery was open. We wanted to get some butter tarts to take to Susan's son Tim's who we were going to visit on Saturday.
They were closed. Bummer.
While we were there we decided to drive down the road and check on the cottage. It had been a while and we like to check it fairly often. Everything looked good in and around the property.
On the way back we drove past Susan's moms cottage which is just down the road. Swinging by I noticed the screen door was open. That can't be good. We get out of the car and walk up to the door and see that it is just hanging open with the frame of the door splintered and broken. Someone has kicked the door in and gone in looking for whatever they can find.
The good news is that there really isn't much in there as it hasn't been used in a few years. Susan's mom is 87 and hasn't been out to spend the summer in a while. It's too much work for her at her age.
So, now what?
I walk over to our cottage and get a tape measure. We measure up the door and head home. We gather up some tools and go to the local Home Depot. We get a 3/4" plywood sheet cut to fit the door frame and head back out to the cottage.
18 deck screws later the cottage is once more secure.
Idiots. This isn't the first time the cottage has been broken into and we figure it is some of the local kids because it isn't a well traveled road. You would think after the first time they would figure there was nothing in there of any value...

That does indeed suck. The part about the bakery too.
Yea. That's what we thought.
